Arlington Bowie Meet its Match

Star Telegram, posted Nov 29, 2008, by Milenko Martinovek

For the first time in a long time, Arlington Bowie looked ordinary.

And ordinary was not going to cut it against Wylie. Bowie, No. 9 in the Associated Press Class 5A state poll and No. 3 in the Star-Telegram Class 5A area rankings, was dominated 43-20 in a UIL Class 5A Division II Region I semifinal at Texas Stadium.

"It’s disappointing," Bowie wide receiver Trae Hawkins said. "They’re a great team, but we didn’t execute. It was frustrating."  Read More

Wylie's Defense Proves Equal to the Task

HS Game Time, Nov 29, 2008

By Matt Wixon

When Wylie's offense scored three touchdowns in the first six minutes of the second half Saturday, the Pirates' defense breathed a sigh of relief. But the defenders were also breathing a lot harder.  Read More

Final: Wylie 43, Arlington Bowie 20

Wylie scored four second-half touchdowns to take down Arlington Bowie 43-20 in a Class 5A Division II Region I semifinal game. Running back Nick Knott finished with 178 total yards and two touchdowns for the Pirates. He score on a 55-yard run and a 79-yard reception. The Volunteers’ Christian Matthew completed 20 of 33 for 250 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Trae Hawkins. DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

4th: Wylie 43, Arlington Bowie 20

Bowie recovered an onside kick at midfield. But a few plays later Alan Menchaca intercepted a Bowie pass to give Wylie the ball at the Pirates 34-yard line with under four minutes remaining in the game.  DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

4th: Wylie 43, Arlington Bowie 20

Bowie’s Ronnie Thomas’ second effort on a four-yard run helped him get into the end zone as the Volunteers keep battling despite trailing by 23 points.  DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

4th: Wylie 43, Arlington Bowie 13

Backup quarterback Deric Davis has come in for the Volunteers for Christian Matthews. Matthews finished the game with 250 yards passing. Davis picked up 32 yards on a running play to get Bowie inside the Wylie 30-yard line.  DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

4th: Wylie 43, Arlington Bowie 13

Wylie’s Nikita Whitlock picked up a blocked punt at the eight-yard line and ran it in for a score to give the Pirates a 43-13 lead with under nine minutes to go at Texas Stadium. DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

Wylie 43, Arlington Bowie 13 (6:50, 4th)

Well, that'll do it.  Wylie just blocked a Bowie punt and Nikita Whitlock, who has been a force all game (as he always seems to be), returned it for a touchdown.
I have to go down to the field, so this will be my last blog until after the game. I'll send a final score to the ticker when its over.  HS Game Time - Matt Wixon

Wylie 36, Arlington Bowie 13 (9:58, 4th)

Bowie has the ball back, but it's running out of time. Wylie just went conservative with its last drive, running the ball three times to drain the clock. That's all the Pirates have to do now after their offensive explosion in the third quarter.
Backup QB Deric Davis has entered the game for Bowie. Matthews was limping a little bit, but I'm not sure what his injury is. Wylie's defense has been top-notch tonight. HS Game Time, Matt Wixon

End of 3rd: Wylie 36, Arlington Bowie 13

The last two Volunteers drives have stalled. Wylie cornerback Daniel Jordan just picked off a Bowie pass and the Pirates have the ball back on their own 11-yard line. DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

3rd: Wylie 36, Arlington Bowie 13

Wylie’s Nick Knott took a handoff 55 yards for a score to give the Pirates a little breathing room against the Volunteers. Knott has 83 yards rushing on eight carries for Wylie. He also has one reception for 79 yards for a touchdown.  DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

Wylie 36, Arlington Bowie 13 (5:05, 3rd)

Make that four touchdowns in the first six minutes of the third quarter.
After Wylie forced a Bowie punt, the Pirates took over at their 45. On the first play, Nick Knott ran it right up the gut ... and through the Bowie defense for a 55-yard touchdown. Now Wylie has forced another punt. Bowie has a quick-strike offense, but it's going to run out of chances to strike. HS Game Time - Matt Wixon

Wylie 29, Arlington Bowie 13 (9:07, 3rd)

Three touchdowns in the first three minutes of the third quarter. After Knott's 79-yard TD reception, Bowie's Christian Matthews threw a 52-yard pass to Justin Foster to take the ball to the Wylie 23. On the next play, Travis Edwards ran for a touchdown. The extra-point kick was wide right.
Wylie responded with a 75-yard TD pass from Monk to Logan Lambert. The Pirates added a two-point conversion to go up by 16.  HS Game time -

3rd: Wylie 29, Arlington Bowie 13

A first-half defensive battle has turned into a second-half offensive battle. Wylie scored on two plays when Jerod Monk hit Logan Lambert for 75 yards. Noah Cheshier scored a two-point conversion on a shuffle pass to make the score 29-13. Bowie missed an extra-point attempt after its last touchdown. DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

3rd: Wylie 21, Arlington Bowie 14

Bowie came right back on its next possession and scored on a four-play 75-yard drive when Travis Evans scored on a 25-yard run. Christian Matthews connected with Justin Foster on the previous play for a 52-yard pass play to the Wylie 25-yard line. DFW Varsity -  Stefan Stevenson

Wylie 21, Arlington Bowie 7 (11:05, 3rd)

Wow, what a start for Wylie. Second play of its opening drive, QB Jerod Monk is flushed out of the pocket and before getting hit dumps the ball to RB Nick Knott. Knott makes a couple of nice moves and then somehow runs through three Bowie defenders without getting more than touched. He's got some good wheels in the open field. It was a 79-yard TD. HS Game Time,

3rd: Wylie 21, Arlington Bowie 7

Nick Knott turned a broken play into a huge play for Wylie on the Pirates’ second play from scrimmage to start the second half. Knott took a pass across the middle from quarterback Jerod Monk, who had scrambled out of the pocket. Knott broke a tackle at midfield and ran it in for a 79-yard touchdown. Wylie leads 21-7. DFW Varsity - Stefan Sevenson

Wylie 14, Arlington Bowie 7 (Halftime)
We've gone to halftime. Here are some stats.
Total offense: Bowie, 241 Wylie 220.
Wylie has rushed 13 times for 27 yards and Bowie has rushed 15 times for 33. Each team has pretty much shut down the running attacks.
Wylie's Jerod Monk is 6-of-10 for 193 yards and 2 TDs.
Bowie's Christian Matthews is 15-of-21 for 154 yards and a TD.
(Each team has thrown a halfback pass successfully).
Wylie's leading receiver is Logan Lambert with two catches for 97 yards.
Bowie's leading receiver is Jonathan Gazaille with two catches for 83 yards.

Half: Wylie 14, Arlington Bowie 7

Arlington Bowie couldn’t convert on 4th-and-1 on the Wylie 34-yard line to end the first half trailing the Pirates 14-7.  DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

2nd: Wylie 14, Arlington Bowie 7

Christian Matthews hit Trae Hawkins down the sidelines to put the Volunteers on the board. After a five-yard false start penalty against Bowie, the Volunteers decided to go for it on a fourth-and-six play at the Wylie 40-yard line. Hawkins broke away just enough in single coverage to make the grab and score the touchdown.  DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

Wylie - 14, Bowie - 7 (4:03, 2nd)

Bowie strikes back with a huge play on fourth-and-6 at the Wylie 40. Christian Matthews throws a beautiful pass that hits Trae Hawkins in stride on the left sideline. It was just a matter of time before the Bowie offense made another big play.

2nd: Wyle 14, Arlington Bowie 0

Wylie receiver Logan Lambert broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and scampered 16 yards for a touchdown to give the Pirates a 14-0 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first half. DFW Varsity - Stefan Stevenson

1st: Wylie 7, Arlington Bowie 0

Wylie quarterback Jerod Monk hit Colby Harper across the middle for a 24-yard touchdown pass to put the Pirates up 7-0 with 2:06 left in the first quarter. Receiver Justin Thompson caught a 33-yard pass on the previous play to set up the touchdown.  DFW Varsity, Stefan Stevenson Posted: Saturday, November 29, 2008

Arlington Bowie, Wylie defenses show up early

Arlington Bowie was stopped on a fourth-and-two at the Wylie six-yard line on the Volunteers’ opening drive. Wylie drove 90 yards to the Bowie five-yard line but was stopped on a fourth-and-1 play.  DFW Varsity, Stefan Stevenson Posted: Saturday, November 29, 2008

Arlington Bowie, Wylie on time

The Mansfield-Cedar Hill game was so quick that the 4 p.m. Arlington Bowie-Wylie game is on schedule. Kickoff is a minute away. DFW Varsity, Stefan Stevenson Posted: Saturday, November 29, 2008

Wylie - 7

Wylie puts together a 41-yard drive for its second TD, capped by a 16-yard reception by Logan Lambert, who pulled out of a tackle on a screen pass, nearly put his knee down, and then scored. Wylie had great field position after the Bowie punter put his knee down while fielding a low snap.  HS Game, Matt Wixon

Bowie - 0 (7:09, 2nd)

Wylie - 7

You always hear coaches (and players) talk about how good defenses "fly to the ball." Wylie's certainly does, and so far, it's made Bowie's high-scoring offense really work for its yards. Bowie is about to punt for the second time. It's other two drives have ended on failed fourth-down attempts. HS Game, Matt Wixon

Bowie - 0 (10:51, 2nd)

Wylie - 7

Wylie strikes first on a 24-yard TD pass from Jerod Monk to Colby Harper. How's this for a start for Monk:He's 3-of-3 for 138 yards and a TD

Bowie - 0 (2:06, 1st)

Arlington Bowie Boast s Diversity of Talent
DFW Varsity, Nov 28, 2008
By Tobias Xavier Lopez

Special to the Star-Telegram/Richard Rodriguez
Arlington Bowie's Keidrick Jackson rushed for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Vols' second-round win.
Arlington Bowie quarterback Christian Matthews somehow developed the ability to teleport the football. Superpowers are one explanation for the trickery Matthews displayed during Bowie’s 56-35 Class 5A area round victory against Midland last Saturday.
Throughout the game the Midland defense, fans and press box folks often couldn’t tell if he had the ball or if he’d slipped it into the hands of one of Bowie’s many running backs. This sort of unpredictability defines the Bowie offense that enters today’s Class 5A Division II regional semifinal against Wylie (10-2) without a real superstar.
The Volunteers (11-1) enjoyed rushing touchdowns from four different ball-carriers to keep Midland off-balance throughout the game. "It’s been like that all year," Bowie coach Kenny Perry said. "All of those guys have equal stats."
Don’t mistake the diversity against Midland as an anomaly. Bowie has spread the offense with a run-pass balance all season long. They’ve also enjoyed a slew of offensive contributions without one player dominating the scoring. Here’s a breakdown of the Volunteers week-by-week balance:

Bowie Tries Special Teams Makeover
DFW Varsity, Nov 25, 2008, Milenko Martinovich

After surrendering two kickoff returns for touchdowns last week against Midland, Arlington Bowie will have some new faces on its coverage teams.

Bowie coach Kenny Perry said the starting linebackers and defensive backs will play on special teams when the Volunteers meet Wylie in a Class 5A Division II Region I semifinal Saturday at Texas Stadium.
Wylie has two special teams touchdown returns this season and one of them occurred last week in the Pirates’ 31-28 area-round win over Hebron.

Football Playoffs are Still Loaded with District 4-5A Teams
Star Telegram, Nov 24, 2008, by Milenko Martinovich

Next opponent: Wylie, Class 5A Division II Region I semifinal, 4 p.m. Saturday, Texas Stadium

How they got here: beat Richland 36-10; beat Midland 56-35

Bowie’s style: Speed is at the heart of Bowie’s success. The Volunteers have quick, explosive players at the skill positions, most notably quarterback Christian Matthews, wide receiver Trae Hawkins and running back Travis Evans. They spread the field and force defenses to make one-on-one tackles. Bowie’s defense is just as fast, but is also physical. The Volunteers allowed only 12.2 points per game during the regular season.

Playoff surprise: For the first time since Week 3, the Volunteers showed some chinks in the armor against Midland, allowing 35 points, equaling the most points the Volunteers have given up this season. Bowie responded by scoring 56 points, tied for the most points it has scored this season. Read More
