Second-Half Surge Lifts Arlington Bowie Past Richland High School

The Richland Rebels, who became the area’s surprise team, had one of the state’s best teams on the ropes early Friday night.

Trailing Arlington Bowie by a touchdown in the third quarter, the Rebels went for a fourth-and-one near midfield. The play was stuffed for a loss and Bowie, ranked ninth in the Associated Press Class 5A poll, scored less than a minute later.

The momentum swung in favor of the Volunteers, who used their ground game in the windy conditions and went on for a 36-10 win in the Class 5A Division II bi-district playoff at Mansfield ISD Stadium.

A state quarterfinalist a year ago, Bowie (10-1) moves on to the area round and will face the winner of today’s game between El Paso Coronado (7-3) and Midland (7-3).

Bowie finished with 453 total yards of offense, with 308 coming on the ground and Trae Hawkins leading the way with 105 yards. Richland’s Tyler Cotton led the Rebels, completing 16 of 39 passes for 185 yards.

Richland ends its season at 9-2, three years after the Rebels went winless. The two teams went a combined 1-19 in 2005.

Justin Foster’s 10-yard run put Bowie up 16-7 with 9:32 left in the third quarter, and Richland could only answer with a field goal on the ensuing drive. The Volunteers put the game away with touchdowns on three of their next five drives.

The Volunteers took the opening kickoff and immediately took the lead. Bowie, going against the wind, ran the ball seven times on its nine-play drive with Christian Matthews throwing a 13-yard pass to Jordan Selexman for the TD.

Arlington Bowie Rolls Past Richland, 36 - 10

In a game billed as a rare bi-district playoff clash between a pair of one-loss teams, Arlington Bowie used a punishing second-half offense to blow past Richland, 36-10, in a Class 5A Division II game Friday night at wind-swept Mansfield ISD Stadium.

Trae Hawkins rushed for 107 yards and cemented the victory for Bowie (10-1) with a 67-yard touchdown run with 4:19 remaining in the game.

Bowie, the District 4-5A champion, will face El Paso Coronado or Midland next week. Richland, the runner-up from District 3-5A, ends its season at 9-2. Phillip Anderson caught eight passes for 118 yards in his last game for Richland.

Bowie outscored Richland, 26-3, in the second half to break the game open after a tense, back-and-forth first half.

Richland had its chance early in the third quarter, but a decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 from midfield backfired. Bowie scored three plays later to grab a 16-7 lead.

Richland failed on several fourth-and-short attempts throughout the game.

Bowie scored on its first possession of the game, driving 61 yards in nine plays.

On Bowie's lone third-down play of the drive, quarterback Christian Matthews threw a middle screen pass to Jordan Selexman for a 13-yard touchdown.

After the kickoff, Richland moved into Bowie territory on 24- and 45-yard receptions by Anderson. But the offense stalled at the Bowie 19.

On its next possession, Richland took advantage of a 7-yard Bowie punt into the wind that set up the offense at the Bowie 32. Later a face mask penalty against Bowie put the ball at the 18.

But Richland's hopes ended when Bowie's Donovan Vestal pounced on a fumble on second-and-7 from the 14

Richland finally broke through on its third trip deep inside Bowie territory.

Quarterback Phillip Gonzales got Richland on the scoreboard when he stretched his arms out for the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Bowie mounted a final threat in the last minute of the second half, aided by a personal foul penalty against Richland. But Ryan Tice's interception with 30 seconds left in the half ended Bowie's drive.

DFW Varsity Game Summary
Bowie-10 Richland-7 (H)
The wind has played a factor at Mansfield ISD Stadium, as both teams have been able to pass with the wind at their backs and limit themselves to running when driving into the wind. Bowie went up 10-0, but Richland had a late second-quarter touchdown drive and intercepted a Bowie pass to end the half.

Bowie, Richland Have Come a Long Way
DFW Varsity, Posted Nov 10, 2008, By Milenko Martinovek

Friday’s Class 5A Division II Region I bi-district playoff between Arlington Bowie and Richland—two 9-1 teams—seems unfair so early in the postseason. But when analyzing the programs’ histories, both are happy to be here.

Three years ago, Bowie and Richland combined for one victory. The Rebels went winless in 2005 and Bowie mustered only one win. Now, they’re two of the area’s elite teams. Richland’s only loss was to Abilene, ranked No. 3 in the state, and Bowie fell to then nationally-ranked Dallas Skyline in nondistrict play.

Its' Playoff Time!

Bowie defensive back Jordan Donnell (5) returns a second-quarter interception against Arlington High on Oct 24, 2008.

It’s time for the second season — the playoffs. For those area teams who qualified for the postseason, there’s no “we’ll get them next week.” There is no next week. For the next six weeks, many teams will play their last games of the season, while only a select few will reach the ultimate goal of a state championship.

Richland (9-1, 5-1 District 3-5A) vs. Arlington Bowie (9-1, 6-0 District 4-5A)

Class 5A Division II Region I bi-district.  7:30 p.m. Friday, Mansfield ISD Stadium

For Arlington Bowie, the Volunteers made history with their first outright district title, doing so just three years removed from a 1-9 season. Their progress is what area fans hope becomes of Richland, who won the state and national 7-on-7 championships and went on to lose just once this year. The Rebels went 0-10 in 2005.

Last meeting: Arlington Bowie d. Richland 27-0 (Sept. 7, 2001). Arlington Bowie erased a long history of losing season openers and road games, as the Volunteers ran for 206 yards while limiting Richland to just 73 yards of total offense. (READ MORE)
