Arlington Bowie Wins Shoot out with Midland
Dallas Morning News, posted Nov 22, 2008, by Staff Writer

Keidrick Jackson rushed for 158 yards and three scores as Arlington Bowie won a shootout with Midland, 56-35, on Saturday at Wichita Falls ISD Stadium.

Bowie drove 80 yards in seven plays on the game's opening drive and went ahead, 7-0, with 10:12 remaining in the first quarter when Trae Hawkins scored on a 20-yard run.

Antwan Goodley returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to tie the score, 7-7. It appeared Bowie had recovered a fumble in the Midland end zone for a touchdown, but Bowie was flagged for being offside on the kickoff and had to kick again.

Bowie drove 55 yards on its second possession and went ahead, 14-7, when quarterback Christian Matthews passed 15 yards to Hawkins on fourth-and-7.

Four plays later, Midland tied the score. Blake Stewart threw a shovel pass to Darius Miller, who raced 61 yards for a touchdown with 7:01 remaining in the first quarter.

Arlington Bowie Plays a Stout Second Half to Beat Midland

Star Telegram, Posted Nov 22, 2008, by Tobias Xavier Lopez

It seemed that the defenses for both Arlington Bowie and Midland got lost on the way to Wichita Falls’ Memorial Stadium. Fortunately for Volunteers their defense apparently found the facility at halftime to slow Midland in a 56-35 Bowie victory in the Class 5A Division II area round.
Bowie advances to the Region I semifinals Saturday to face Wylie at Texas Stadium at a time to be determined.
The Volunteers defense and special teams allowed 28 first-half points but clamped down to hold Midland to seven points in the second half. Meanwhile the Bowie offense provided an unpredictable mix of playmakers behind quarterback Christian Matthews. Bowie got touchdowns from six different players including a rushing and two passing touchdowns from Matthews. "I guess its all about team," Matthews said. "We go through practice every day all about team. So going to each one is a good thing and everybody came with it."
While Bowie was diverse, Midland proved one dimensional behind stellar running back Darius Miller who rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown.

The opening half was a circus with no rings to contain the action as the two teams combined for 70 points. Bowie scored on its first possession but gave up a 90-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kick. With 4:43 left in the first Bowie held a 21-14 lead but gave up a second kick return touchdown, this one 88 yards.

Early in the second quarter, Volunteers powerback  Keidrick Jackson smashed a 1-yard run to tie the game 28-28 with 10:28 remaining in the half. A pair of Midland turnovers at the hands of Bowie linebacker Chris Hank turned the game in the Volunteers favor for good. Hank snagged an interception off a failed shovel pass which led to a Bowie drive for the 35-28 lead. On Midland’s next possession Hank recovered a fumble on Midland’s 3 yard line. The next play Matthews rushed in from 3 yards for the 42-28 halftime lead.

After a wild first half, Bowie’s defense held Midland to a single touchdown in the second half to secure the 56-35 victory. Six different players scored for Bowie in a diverse effort that pushed the Volunteers into the Class 5A regional semifinals against Wylie next Saturday at Texas Stadium. Midland - 28 Bowie - 42 (H)

The Volunteers’ offense is rolling in a wild shootout against Midland. The Volunteers have rushed for four touchdowns and quarterback Christian Matthews has thrown for two. However Midland returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Bulldogs running back Darius Miller has proven taxing with 98 first-half yards and a rushing touchdown. Midland gets the ball to start the second half. DFWVarsity - Tobias Xavier Lopez

Class 5A Division II area round
Star Telegram, posted Nov 21, 2008

Midland (8-3) has a high-powered offense averaging 38.3 points per game, but those numbers dwindle against quality opponents. Midland was 1-3 against playoff teams this season and averaged 24 points. Darius Miller is the key to Midland’s offense. He rushed for 1,473 yards and 18 touchdowns in the regular season. Bowie has won eight consecutive games and can tie the school record set last season with a win. The Volunteers, No. 3 in the Star-Telegram Class 5A area rankings and No. 9 in the Associated Press Class 5A state poll, haven’t scored fewer than 29 points in a game this season. Read More
