No. 4 Arlington Bowie, 38,
Arlington Lamar 22: Speed was the name
of the game for Bowie as it won its fourth
consecutive game. The Volunteers (6-1, 3-0 in
District 4-5A) used stretch running plays and
receiver screens to roll up 412 yards of total
offense. Lamar (5-3, 2-2) played well and trimmed
Bowie’s lead to three points midway through the
third quarter, but could get no closer.

Bowie Uses Speed to Down Arlington Lamar |

|
There
is no substitute for speed, and Arlington Bowie has
loads of it. Bowie, No. 4 in
the Star-Telegram Class 5A area
rankings, used that speed to break open a
close game in the second half and rolled to a 38-22
victory Friday over Arlington Lamar at Maverick
Stadium. |
|
"I
thought our offense did a great job with that,"
Bowie coach Kenny Perry said. "I thought our coaches
did a great job of scheming this week and it paid
off." |
|
Bowie
(6-1, 3-0 in District 4-5A) used an assortment of
players and tactics to dice Lamar’s defense for 412
total yards, but the Volunteers’ most effective tool
was a stretch running play that forced the Vikings
to run the width of the field to chase Bowie ball
carriers. And rarely did the Vikings catch them in
time. |
|
The play worked the best
in the second half as Lamar’s defense grew weary.
Bowie wide receiver Trae
Hawkins exploited it the most rushing for 56
yards — all in the second half — on only four
carries. That effective stretch play complemented
fine performances from quarterback
Christian Matthews (14
of 23 completions for 169 yards and a touchdown) and
running back Travis Evans (95 rushing yards, TD).

Bowie - 38 Arlington
Lamar - 22 |
|
Dallas Morning News,

|
Arlington Bowie remained
undefeated in District 4-5A with a convincing 38-22
win over crosstown rival Arlington Lamar.
|
|
Keidrick Jackson scored for Bowie on runs of
1 and 2 yards. Quarterback
Christian Matthews threw one touchdown pass
and ran for another. |
|
Inadvertent whistles
cost Bowie (6-1, 3-0) two other potential
touchdowns. Twice the Bowie quarterback faked the
ball to an inside runner and broke into the open
field apparently heading for a score, only to have
the play blown dead. |
|
The
Vikings (5-3, 2-2) fell victim to their own
mistakes. Lamar lost three fumbles, two of which
Bowie converted into touchdowns, and also had a
41-yard touchdown run nullified by penalty.

Referee Ed Hochuli must be working tonight's game at
UT-Arlington's Maverick Stadium. Bowie QB
Christian Matthews
faked a handoff and raced 55 yards to the end zone.
But the official blew his whistle because he thought
the player who'd taken Matthews' fake had been
tackled. They gave Matthews just a four-yard gain.
Matthews does have a 61-yard TD pass to
Jonathan Gazaille.
Bowie also has a 2-yard TD run by
Kedrick Jackson.
Lamar's TD is a 15-yard run by Ja'Terian Douglas. Ed

Evaluated its Defense, and Elevated its Play |

"That Skyline game was
the best thing that happened to us,"
coach Kenny
Perry said. "The thing that it did was defensively,
it told us we had to make some changes." |
|
"We’ve got some great
defensive coaches, and that’s where it
started," Perry said. "They were taking kids that
had never played varsity, eight or nine, and working
with them and hanging in there. But we needed
consistency. Our alignment. Some of our keys. I’ve
always been a pressure, pressure guy, but sometimes,
you can’t do that if you don’t have the personnel." |
|
The
Volunteers have used 10 defensive linemen and eight
defensive backs in an effort to find the right
combination. |
|
Dexter Linton has been reliable, but now
players such as Jarrett Brown,
Ryan Norwood, Aaron Williams and Neiman Johnson
have emerged to go with
veterans Chris Hank and Caleb Carter. (READMORE)

Bowie Meets Arlington Lamar in Football Action |

Lamar leads the all-time
series 22-2, but Bowie has won the past two
contests. Lamar (5-2, 2-1 District 4-5A) has won
three of its past four games, including two
consecutive district contests, to put itself in
position for a potential playoff berth. The Vikings
have the No. 2 offense among Class 5A area teams,
averaging 441.7 total yards per game. They will be
tested by Bowie (5-1, 2-0) which has the area’s best
defense among Class 5A area teams, surrendering only
163 total yards per game. The
Volunteers, No. 4 in the Star-Telegram Class 5A area
rankings, have recorded three shutouts this
season, the first time that has happened since 1979. |

Lamar Readies
for Stout Offense and Defense |

Arlington Lamar has faced one of the area’s best
offenses in Arlington and one of the best defenses
in Tyler John Tyler. But the
Vikings will face the complete package Friday when
they play Arlington Bowie. The Volunteers’
offense averages 43.5 points and 374.3 total yards
of offense per game and their defense is best among
Class 5A area teams allowing 8.8 points and 163
total yards. |
|
But
the Vikings have cause for optimism. Lamar has won
two consecutive district games and coach Eddy Peach
said the second and third quarters against Mansfield
Summit last week might have been the best the
Vikings have looked all season. |
|
"They’re good in every aspect of the game," Peach
said of Bowie. "There aren’t any weaknesses. But if
we go out and play like we did in the second quarter
and third quarter against Summit, we’ll give
ourselves an opportunity to be in the game."

Not an Easy
Week at Bowie |

Arlington Bowie coach Kenny
Perry said it’s no fun preparing for to play
Arlington Lamar. Not only do the Vikings have one of
the best offenses in the area, but Perry played at
Lamar and was coached by Eddy Peach, who is still
roaming the sidelines at Lamar. |
|
"I
don’t get excited about it one bit," Perry said.
"That’s my alma mater and I have some great
relationships over there, but it’s not going to
change our approach." |
|
Bowie
did receive some bad news as defensive tackle
Kendrick Graves
suffered a broken ankle and ligament damage in last
week’s 51-0 victory over Mansfield, Perry said.
Perry said Graves is scheduled to have surgery
Wednesday. |

As defenders left the
field following a fourth-down incompletion,
Texas
cornerback Ryan Palmer said he sensed something
special about this year’s unit. "That showed we can
be a hard-nosed, blue-collar defense," said Palmer,
a senior from Arlington Bowie. "That gave us a lot
of confidence."
