Bowie Tops Summit for First Outright District Title |
|

After his team
wrapped up a 35-14 victory against Mansfield Summit
on Friday night, Arlington Bowie coach
Kenny Perry
gathered his players on the field and pulled a gold,
football-shaped trophy out of a cardboard box.
|
|
"This has been a long
time coming," Perry told his players. The
celebration that followed commemorated Bowie’s
outright district championship, which Perry said is
the first district title in the school’s history.
|
|
|
|
Bowie (9-1, 6-0 in
District 4-5A) will play Richland in a bi-district
playoff game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mansfield ISD
Stadium. |
|
"This is the result
of all the hard work we put in in the classroom and
in the off-season," Perry said. |
|
Bowie trailed 7-6 at
halftime, but scored 29 points in the first seven
minutes of the third quarter. Quentin Sargent
returned the opening kickoff of the second half 80
yards for a touchdown to give the Volunteers their
first lead. |
|
After Bowie recovered
a fumble on the ensuing possession by Summit (3-7,
1-5), quarterback Christian Matthews connected with
Trae Hawkins on a 43-yard touchdown pass to extend
the lead to 20-7. |
|
Bowie recovered
another Jaguars fumble moments later and turned it
into Keidrick Jackson’s 10-yard scoring run.
|
|
The scoring outburst
was capped by a 25-yard pass from backup quarterback
Deric Davis to
Jonathan Gazaille. |
|
Davis and
Matthews combined to complete 15 of 21 passes for 209 yards.
Hawkins hauled in five passes for 134 yards and two
touchdowns. |
|
An interception set
up Summit’s touchdown drive in the first quarter.
Lewis Washington
had a 26-yard pass reception and scored the
touchdown from the 3 on the 11-play, 58-yard drive. |

Bowie Playing to Win |
|
DFW Varsity, Posted

Arlington Bowie has already locked up a playoff
berth in District 4-5A and the Volunteers know they
will be the district’s No. 1 seed in Division II. So
how much is really riding on Friday’s game against
Mansfield Summit? |
|
Bowie
coach Kenny Perry’s
answer was blunt. "Our first goal is to win the
game," Perry said. "We’ve got some kids that are
banged up and we’re going to give them some rest.
I’ve got to be smart about this. But we want to
win." |
|
A
victory Friday wouldn’t be meaningless for Bowie.
The Volunteers can clinch the
program’s first outright district championship. |

Kenny Perry, coach of
District 4-5A champion Arlington Bowie, said he
might rest a few players in Bowie's regular-season
finale Friday against Mansfield Summit. But he'll be
playing to win, and that's despite having first-hand
knowledge of what the loss of one player can do to a
team. |
|
In the third game of the
season, Bowie quarterback Christian Matthews was
sidelined by a bruised shin and Bowie (8-1, 5-0 in
4-5A) suffered its only loss. A similar injury to
Matthews or another key player and Friday's game,
which means nothing to playoff position, would mean
a lot to playoff hopes. |
|
Perry might not protect
those players in a game, but he will do it in
practices. Bowie players are hitting in practice
only once a week now, and most teams begin easing
the workload on players late in the season.
